Links for Step 1 in Planning your Sustainable City Tour
This page contains links to our Sustainable Tours Global Directory, where you can begin to select sustainability related sites or highlights to include on your tour. There is also a link to our page of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) educational academies and learning resources. This provides great opportunities to learn about sustainability and how you can describe to your tour users the SGDs that are reflected by the sites you choose to include. Don't forget to include one stop or highlight one aspect that demonstrates how the SDGs are being blocked or what could be improved. Coordinate with local businesses, civil societies, organizations or governments to discuss how this can be improved. Click on the box below for the Directories and Indexes or for Learning Resources.

Sample Tour Outline
This is an education-oriented website to teach users how to create sustainable city tours based on the use of the U.N. SGDs. Sustainable City Tours are created by individuals, groups or businesses that want to highlight sustainable sites, events, or sustainable businesses in their city. Users plan tours, define highlights/stops, and describe how these reflect the SDGs. I have attached an example of a tour created for two non-profit sustainability organizations in Basel (You must download Komoot to view): https://www.komoot.com/tour/1788403848. Here is a an example of the initial idea design process for creating a sustainable city tour for walking in Rheinfelden, Switzerland, including 10 sustainable highlight stops and the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reflected at each stop. This type of idea design sketch is a good first step to decide what general types of stops you want to include in your Sustainable City Tour. Look through this design sketch and think about the specific sites you have available that demonstrate UN SDGs and would fit in a practical outline for the tour. Eco-Friendly Accommodation: Start the tour at an eco-friendly hotel or hostel in Rheinfelden. This stop reflects SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, by promoting sustainable tourism practices and reducing the environmental impact of accommodation facilities. Rheinbrücke (Rhine Bridge): Cross the Rhine River via the Rheinbrücke, which offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. This stop reflects SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by showcasing the importance of well-maintained infrastructure for connectivity and economic development. Saline Museum: Visit the Saline Museum, which highlights the history of salt production in Rheinfelden. This stop reflects SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by promoting local industries and preserving cultural heritage for sustainable economic development. Rheinpark: Take a stroll through Rheinpark, a beautiful riverside park with walking trails and green spaces. This stop reflects SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by providing access to green spaces for recreation and promoting urban biodiversity. Solar Power Installation: Stop by a solar power installation in Rheinfelden to learn about renewable energy initiatives in the city. This stop reflects SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, by promoting the use of renewable energy sources to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change. Urban Farm: Visit an urban farm in Rheinfelden, where locally grown produce is cultivated using sustainable farming practices. This stop reflects SDG 2: Zero Hunger, by promoting food security and sustainable agriculture in the community. Historic Old Town: Explore the historic Old Town of Rheinfelden, with its charming medieval architecture and cobblestone streets. This stop reflects SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by preserving cultural heritage and promoting sustainable urban development. Waste Recycling Center: Visit a waste recycling center in Rheinfelden to learn about the city's waste management and recycling efforts. This stop reflects SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, by promoting waste reduction, recycling, and resource efficiency. Bienenhaus (Bee House): Stop by a Bienenhaus, or bee house, to learn about beekeeping and the importance of pollinators for ecosystem health. This stop reflects SDG 15: Life on Land, by raising awareness about biodiversity conservation and the protection of pollinator species. Rhine River Cleanup: Participate in a Rhine River cleanup activity organized by local environmental groups. This stop reflects SDG 14: Life Below Water, by promoting marine conservation and reducing marine pollution in the Rhine River ecosystem. This sample Sustainable City Tour idea design sketch can help showcase Rheinfelden's commitment to sustainability across various sectors, including tourism, energy, agriculture, waste management, and environmental conservation, while addressing multiple U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The next step in the Sustainability City Tour process is to select the specific sites or stops you want to highlight. These can be found on Rheinfelden's Tourism site: https://www.tourismus-rheinfelden.ch/en/plan-booking/packages-offers/sustainable-rheinfelden After you selection the stops to highlight, you can upload your Sustainable City Tour to any one of the touring apps you use or those highlighted on our website in the Toolbox under Links for Step 2.
